Initially there were reports that 13000 homes were destroyed in the Bahamas by Hurricane Dorian. That was Monday night, September 3rd and now the death toll has risen significantly since that day. Over 76,000 people have been displaced. There is no water, electricity - the entire island was submerged, much like the lost of city of Atlantis. The reports are beyond devastating, and depressing to not only those that lived there, but those of us so close by who spend time in the Bahamas. It also could have been us, anyone of us as catastrophic events don't discriminate and neither does mother nature.
To witness the outpouring love and support was amazing, and I personally saw first hand as my generous friends responded immediately. But so often people forget or get busy with their own lives as eventually life must go on. As I was watching the events unfold and laying in bed watching the horrific news reports, something got me out of bed and compelled me to create www.13000.love for the Bahamian people. The number 13 has always been somewhat taboo in my superstitious family, but something happened that night and here we are; it is and will continue to be the catalyst for doing good. I will now use this site, www.13000.love and all energy around philanthropic activities for 13000 lovers. The goal will be to constantly help 13000 people someway and somehow.
Whiles it's been amazing to see our local communities and government stateside rush to their aid and others that often fall into similar situations, we need to be certain that we continue to provide relief and also at the right time, to the right people, and the right relief. What I love most is seeing a few individuals take charge and create impact immediately with their grassroots approach, which is exactly what my friends did. Therefore our mission is to always be helping 13000 individuals and/or families rebuild, completely volunteer based and organized.
By leveraging technology and mobile applications we will provide real time inventory available and needed, in order to illustrate up to date needs. We will share information and collaborate to maximize efforts. We must divide and conquer to ensure help is reaching those that need it the most, and the quickest. Always.
While there are other charities and organizations, this one was initially created to help the survivors and victims of hurricane Dorian. The goal has not changed, but been modified to help them and others too. So maybe you can give clothes, home goods, food, a few dollars, whatever it is -- even your time and guidance in your area of expertise such as book keeping, inventory management, mobile application development -- whatever it is, please reach out if you would like to join the movement.
